Financial Management for Purpose-Led Organisations

  • Course
  • 59 Lessons

A practical online course for charities, CICs, social enterprises and other purpose-led organisations. Learn how to build effective financial controls, manage budgets and cashflow, monitor funding, understand the true cost of projects and services, and strengthen financial decision-making. Includes the complete editable Dravero Financial Management Toolkit.

Is this course for you?

Good financial management becomes increasingly important as an organisation grows. You may have more funding streams, more people involved in making decisions, employees to pay, projects to monitor and commitments that extend well beyond the money currently sitting in the bank.

The systems that worked when your organisation was smaller may no longer give you the information or control you need.

Financial Management for Purpose-Led Organisations is designed for people who are responsible for managing or overseeing the finances of a charity, Community Interest Company (CIC), social enterprise or other purpose-led organisation.

It may be particularly useful if you:

  • have financial processes that have developed over time but have never been brought together into a clear system;

  • want to strengthen your financial controls and governance;

  • need better budgeting, forecasting or cashflow management;

  • manage grants, restricted funding or several projects;

  • employ staff and need to understand their full employment cost and allocate staffing costs appropriately;

  • want to understand the full cost of delivering projects and services, including organisational overheads, so that funding applications, contracts and pricing are based on realistic costs;

  • need clearer arrangements for purchasing, expenses, payroll or organisational assets;

  • are preparing for growth and want your financial systems to grow with you; or

  • are a trustee or director who wants greater confidence in the financial information and controls used by your organisation.

You don't need to be an accountant or bookkeeper.

This course isn't about learning how to prepare accounts. It is about understanding your organisation's finances well enough to manage them, understand what your activities really cost, make informed decisions and maintain appropriate oversight.

More than a course

Financial Management for Purpose-Led Organisations includes the complete Dravero Financial Management Toolkit.

Rather than giving you information about good financial management and leaving you to create the systems yourself, the course includes practical, editable documents and workbooks that you can adapt for use within your own organisation.

The toolkit includes:

  • Implementation Guide

  • Financial Management & Controls Checklist

  • Financial Procedures Policy

  • Delegated Authority Matrix

  • Budgeting Workbook – build organisational and project budgets, calculate overhead recovery and understand the full cost of delivering individual projects and activities

  • Staff Budget & Allocation Workbook – calculate the full cost of employing staff and allocate staff time and costs across projects and wider organisational activity, working alongside the Budgeting Workbook to support full cost recovery

  • Cashflow Workbook – forecast when money is expected to be received and paid and identify potential cashflow pressures

  • Funds Tracker Workbook

  • Procurement Register Workbook

  • Expenses Claim Policy

  • Expenses Claim Workbook

  • Asset Register Workbook

The resources are introduced at the relevant points in the course, alongside guidance on how and why they are used. At the end of the course, you'll also find the complete toolkit together in one place so that you can return to it whenever you need it.

All of the policies and workbooks are supplied in editable Microsoft Word or Excel format, allowing you to adapt them to reflect the size, structure, activities and financial arrangements of your organisation.

The aim isn't to give you a folder of templates. It's to help you understand how the different parts of your financial management system fit together and how to use them in practice.
